2012 Fiat 500 Abarth power steering

The 500 Abarth has 58 percent more power and 73 percent more torque than the 500, on which it depends, but halfway through my evening with the Abarth, I was not thinking that the car is 58 percent was better than the base model. It feels as if Fiat put tires on the front wheels that were too wide - I think they did.

I was in the middle of the grumbling about the shortcomings of the Abarth when something happened: The road I was driving on one of the access roads to Detroit Metro Airport went into a tunnel. I rolled the window, opened the massive sunroof, moved into second, and it Goosed.

Things changed quickly: The small four-cylinder Burble was a cry that no doubt the passengers were rattling in the Lincoln Town Car sedan behind me. It was as if I were gunning a Ferrari through the tunnels of Monaco, even though my little Fiat was doing only, 45 miles per hour and I was driving in Romulus, Michigan. I thought the concern for the steering and began to laugh.

All in all, makes little sense as the only Abarth car - its upgrades over the stock 500 make it more difficult than to use every day - so if this is your only car, you buy a Volkswagen GTI instead. But if your garage has two cars for an empty seat and you are willing to spend $ 27 000 on the vehicle comedy, do yourself a favor and get one. The smile never left her face.

I cannot remember the last time I had so much fun with a press car - or felt so emotionally torn when it was time to give the key to driving it for a night. power certainly does not hurt. 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque does not necessarily sound like much, but they turn the 2,500-pound Fiat into a pocket monster. I was expecting to have to fight an incredible increase of torque steer, but the Abarth is surprisingly benign.

So when you start mashing the throttle in the corner  in fact, even when provoked, the Abarth mechanical limited-slip front diff transfers power to the ground with little drama, wheel slip, tires or smoke. A stiffer suspension tuning leads to a bouncier ride.

Anything that encourages the obvious emotions, but how does it stack up Barth rational? Skip the sexy white wheels, side stripes, sunroof, navigation system, leather seats, and found here in our test unit, and the well-equipped 500 Barth sticker for a touch over $ 23,000. Not bad, but there is not much lower than the comparable Mini Cooper S Hardtop, which provides a little more interior space and a bit more power. It is also not so far away from the larger, more sophisticated, but equally enjoyable Volkswagen GTI.

I really wanted to like the Abarth. The idea of a Fiat 500 with a stupid power is certainly good. The version of the Abarth is also great. But there still is a Fiat 500, a car that I find just too cumbersome to drive. Like the Mustang GT500 tightened based ergonomic shortcomings, makes the base 500 Barth awkward seating position intolerable. I cannot sit this high performance in a vehicle. Sitting close enough to the wheel to the control means being on the car, my right foot is not very convenient, because the momentum of the pedals relative to the position of the seat. It is a deal breaker.

If you fit into the 500 and like to drive fast with a booming exhaust happen, the Abarth is perfect. There is so much character in the exhaust system, in particular setting, when the sport, you'll forgive the lack of electric power steering feedback. As Evan says, is the only way to have a better sounding exhaust system will get in any kind of classic cars. Looking for excuses to drive by empty tunnels, parking garages, or in addition to concrete barriers, so that the sound can echo as much as possible. It's so good.

The pricing of an Abarth may scare away some potential buyers, but the base is 500 already for what it is expensive. I think the Abarth is a screaming crowd, if you think about all the extra equipment and how good the car is tuned. I would still like to see some better lights in the package, but otherwise it's hard to fault. No other factory-tuned car anywhere near this price has as much personality as Fiat Barth was packaged in the. It's a shame that I cannot comfortably in this cars.
